Liverpool knock out Benfica to advance to Champions League semi-finals

LIVERPOOL, UK — Liverpool didn’t need their best to secure the Champions League semi-finals.

Head coach Jürgen Klopp chose to give away stars Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold before watching his substitutes deliver an entertaining 3-3 draw at Benfica in the second leg quarter-finals, winning 6-4 on aggregate.

Villareal will be the opponent of the English club in the next round.

Ibrahima Konaté, who also scored in the 3-1 first leg win, opened the scoring. Roberto Firmino added a brace in the second half of the match played at Anfield.

Gonçalo Ramos made it 1-1 in the 32nd minute to keep Benfica’s slim chances of progress, but Liverpool never looked worried, even with goals from Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez in the 73rd and 82nd minutes.

Liverpool could get their hands on four trophies this season which would be unprecedented. That Klopp was able to get his side rolling after taking a two-goal lead in Lisbon last week should give him all the backing for the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Saturday.

The Citizens couldn’t count on the same luxury this Wednesday, as they delivered a tough 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital, confirming their 1-0 win on aggregate.

In the semi-finals, Manchester City will this time face Real Madrid, who defeated Chelsea, the defending champions.

Man City have never won the Champions League title.

Atletico have had just three shots on target, having managed none in the first leg.

The Spanish club played the final minutes at 10, with defender Felipe sent off for kicking an opponent.

There were a dozen minutes of added time, where Atletico missed a few chances.

Before that, Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan hit the post from a short distance in the 30th minute.

Manchester City are 13 straight away matches unbeaten, including 10 wins.
